As we could not find a suitable tour for August we are again going to the Bath festival this year.
This takes place from Friday 6th – Sunday 8th August, there will be the usual Friday night social gathering and I am pleased to say the Saturday Night Fancy Dress will be returning this year to the University nightclub (which going on previous tours will a better atmosphere than last years Saturday night).
Costs will be £30-£35 per night for accommodation (this may change as they are trying to get it down to £20 per night).
Approx £15 per person to go towards the £270 entry fee.
And £15 for the Tour shirt (We intend to have a one off tour shirt this year so those who are going to Swindon will already have theirs).
So Total cost for 2 nights will be around £90 or less.
If you would like to come please contact Stuart on 07900028732 or e-mail stuart.colmer@btinternet.com
We will require a £50 deposit for those wanting to go.
1. Chairman’s Welcome and Report
Approximately 35 members attended the meeting at the Cotswold Way, Bourton-on-the-Water and the Chairman, Stuart Colmer, opened the AGM by welcoming everyone.
The 2009-10 season had been long and frustrating due to the bad weather, but Stuart was very pleased at how all the teams had done. The Club is growing and, for the first time in a few years, we were able to enter a Badgers team into the league. This is very encouraging as, obviously, these members will eventually feed into the Men’s teams who lost a few players this season.
The Junior sections continue to expand and we were able to nominate quite a few U12, U14 and U16s for JDC County training.
The Mixed League suffered a lot from the bad weather, with games being cancelled and re-arranged. However, we were able to enter two teams into the Cleevillians Cancer Charity Tournament. We managed to achieve 1 goal through the whole day – but really enjoyed it, nevertheless!
Stuart extended his thanks to Caroline who organised and made all of the team teas, Debbie for coaching and to the rest of coaching staff, Philip the 1st XI Captain, Emile and Greg the 2nd XI organisers, Lesley for managing the Vixens (and providing the minibus!), Julian for managing and developing the Badgers and Katie for running the Mixed team.
Finally he gave a massive thanks to all the parents who provide much support and taxi-services to enable the Juniors to play.
2. Team Reports
1st XI Team Report
Phil Dougherty, the 1st Team’s Captain reported on their season. He likened it to running two teams – the Home Side (consisting of 12-13 players) who achieved 7 Wins and 4 Losses, and the Away Side (8-9 players) which managed 7 Losses, 2 Wins and 2 Draws!
It has been a struggle this season as the team lost a few players when they were relegated from the Welsh League to the Gloucester League at the end of last season. Phil thanked all the team members, especially those who had managed to make both home and away fixtures and a special thanks to those members from the 2nd Team who stepped in to help make up the numbers (not forgetting Stuart who had an unforgettable game playing in goal against Lydney!).
2nd XI Team Report
Emile explained that he doesn’t run the 2nd team – it runs itself! He thanked Greg for organising the teams on the day and went on to say that they had had some really good results despite some “brutal” opposition. Some of the team have gained experience by playing for the 1st XI and it is inevitable that a few will go up into that team next season. Nevertheless, Emile is looking forward to a good season next year.
Badgers
Tom reported on behalf of his dad, Julian, that the Badgers had played 16 games - won 5, drew 1 and lost 10.
Julian was extremely proud of the team, who started the season with quite a few big losses due to their inexperience playing against long-established and older teams. However, they improved as the season went on and put forward some good opposition; this was particularly reflected in the games against Cirencester, the first Sherborne lost 6-0, but they won the rematch 2-1!
A big thank you to all the parents for their support.
Vixens
Lesley Blackwell reported that the season had been badly disrupted due to the weather. The Vixens is a very young team, but improving all the time. She thanked Caroline for providing the cakes and all the parents for their support during the season.
3. Election of Officers
The following were elected unanimously and despite their protestations!
| a. | Chairman | Stuart Colmer | |
| b. | Secretary | Gillian Cradock | |
| c. | Treasurer | Simon Green | |
| d. | Fixture Secretary | Emmelio Grey | |
| e. | Captain Men’s 1st XI | Phil Dougherty | Vice Captain: James MacCurrach |
| f. | Captain Men’s 2nd XI | Greg Shepherd | Vice Captain: Emmelio Grey |
| g. | Mixed Captain | Kate hill | Vice Captain: Mike Freeman |
| h. | Vixen’s Captain | Lesley Blackwell | |
| i. | Badger's Captain | Julian Ebbutt | |
| j. | Child Protection Officer | Claire Colmer | |
| k | Junior Liaison Officer | Stuart Colmer | |
| l. | Coaches | Stuart Colmer, Debbie Honour + 1 senior coach for the Men. | |
| m. | Umpires | To be decided** | |
| n. | Social Committee | Mark Godwin, Claire Colmer and Carl Smith | |
* Debbie and Stuart will be in charge of leading the junior sections but the club would like to get an outside coach to help (possibly Ian McClellan from Witney) to take on Men’s coaching.
** Ideally, the club would like to get more members involved in umpiring. There is a course in September which Julian and Mark are willing to go on. The more umpires we have, the easier it will be to cover the various fixtures. The only stipulation is that you must be over 16. If anyone is interested, please could they let Stuart know.
4. Treasurer’s Report
This year, the club has come in with a surplus of £622 (as opposed to a loss of £87 last year) on a turnover of £12,642. Two thirds of this figure is down to pitch hire and the club will try to ensure that the best rates are negotiated for next year. It was confirmed by the Chairman that the Leisure Centre did not charge for games cancelled due to bad weather. It was also confirmed that replacement goalie kits do come out of funds but as these were replaced in 2008-09 they did not affect the figures for 2009-10.
5. Match Fees for 2010-11 Season
As the club is in credit, it was agreed that membership and match fees will remain unchanged for 2010-11 and the hiring of a coach (mentioned in point 3.) will go ahead.
6. Proposed Use of Cotswold Way for Teas
It was proposed, and agreed that, next season, following home games, match teas will be prepared and served at Cotswold Way (the building next to the British Legion Club in Bourton) where this evening’s function was held.
7. Website
A new website has been set up for the Club by Rob Collard, who was given a vote of thanks at the meeting for all his hard work. Using the same name as the old site, the new website is running well and it is hoped that after every game, match reports are sent to Stuart or direct to Rob for posting on the site. It is also planned to post information on Social functions, team selections, availability, etc and to use it a lot more than the previous website.
8. Sponsorship
Last year, the club had 2 sponsors and these proved very useful in providing funding (over £500) for various things, eg shirts, etc. Unfortunately, we do not have any sponsors for this year and members were asked if they knew of anyone who would be prepared to sponsor the club. If so, please could they let Simon Green know.
Failing that, then perhaps a Fundraising committee could be set up. Again, if anyone is interested, perhaps they could let Stuart or Simon know.
9. Training
The club plans to continue with training on Mondays and Wednesdays. If we can get a coach to help with the men’s teams, then it is planned to have Men’s training on Mondays and Junior and Mixed on Wednesdays. The question of goal-keeping training was raised and although it is not planned for the coach to cover this, Stuart promised to look at alternative provision.
Pre-season fitness training will start on Wednesday 11th August on Wednesday nights, then moving to Mondays when the Junior section re-starts in September.
10. Recruitment
Although numbers are rising steadily, particularly amongst the junior sections, a recruitment drive would be useful to get more people interested. Chipping Norton School is being approached to try and get some of their pupils interested but it was felt that more could be done to “up the profile” of the club. Nick Rew offered to do some marketing for the club.
11. Any Other Business
Timetabling
Problems over the timetabling of games on a Saturday was raised, particularly with regard to umpires who, having umpired a game, then have to go on and play a match. It was felt that this could be addressed if more members came forward to do the umpiring course but, in the meantime, the timetabling of 1st and 2nd team matches would have to be agreed between the teams.
EHA Refund
Stuart was able to confirm that the club, following a decision that VAT should not be paid on affiliation fees, had received a refund of £138 from the England Hockey Association. The amount the club pays will be adjusted for next year.
Shirts
New shirts are now available – in S, M, L, XL, XXL at a cost of £25. Please let Stuart know if you would like to order one. You can pick your own number (not 1-17 and you will need to check with Stuart which numbers are available as some have already been taken).
Members’ Email Addresses
It is hoped, this year, that we can build up a database of members’ email addresses as it is a very quick and cost-effective way of sending out information, particularly about fixtures, availability, team selections, etc. Please can members ensure that they let Stuart have their email addresses (either directly or through the membership application forms).
Socks
The blue with yellow hoop club socks have, unfortunately, been discontinued from where we initially got them but are still currently available at ‘Famous’ in Cheltenham for £5.
Summer League
Kate is running this and it is doing well – currently top of the league!
Following a very tasty carvery meal and replenishment of glasses, the 2009-10 Sherborne Hockey Club Awards Ceremony took place. Recipients were as follows:

Ladies & Gents - In regard to the summer social I am thinking of a date around the July 4th...... The social will ideally incorporate a marquee (Stu to provide) a pig roast and cheap beer etc at Sherborne Club - the social will be at Sherborne club or in the vicinity of it.
Please everyone put this date in your diary - I will need approx £5.00 up front for the pig roast etc - you will get your moneys worth as a pig will generally feed approx 200 people so will be a cheap night - camping, as far as I know is welcome.
